GRANDParents...

My children are blessed with two very different sets of Grandparents. As Hannah Montana might say- they've got "the best of both worlds."

Grandma and Grandpa Nef are salt of the earth people. They aren't as young as they once were, but can still outwork most people I know- (including me.) These grandparents have 35 grandchildren + 10 (almost 11- my nephew is getting married this weekend) spouses of grandkids + 6 GREAT grandchildren (and there is one more on the way).

Grandma and Grandpa Carrell are newly retired and enjoying the feeling of freedom they are loving. They have 6 grandchildren (with one on the way- yea Jill!). While these grandparents are hard workers, they love to have fun.

Grandpa and Claire on one of the horses. Grandpa loves his horses and can still hang upside down on the rings. (I think this is quite a feat when you are 86.)

Grandma and Grandpa Nef work in the Twin Falls Temple two days every week. They served a mission in Singapore, Malaysia and India. They don't just go to church- they live what they believe. My dad doesn't talk a lot. He doesn't have to- his example speaks volumes.

Grandma and Kailey. Grandma enjoys sewing and especially loves to quilt. She still bakes homemade bread and cookies frequently.

Just this week, some women pointed out some characteristics that they admired in my mother. She was not pleased. As she said, "I don't want them holding me up as an example!" I just laughed at her and told her, "Well, mom then you are living the wrong way."

Aunt Nancy, Madison and Grandpa (the farm 2009)

Grandpa and Grandma Nef are really good at making people feel important. I know several of my cousins who will go out of their way to spend time with Aunt Faye and Uncle LaMar. These grandparents try hard to be at every important milestone. I don't think they have missed very many blessings, baptisms, graduations, or weddings. They are concerned about each individual in their family and hope that all of their descendants will grow up to be faithful, hard working people. When I talk to my parents, I am reminded of things that I need to remember and also to teach my children.

Grandpa and Emery at Busch Gardens.

Grandpa and Grandma Carrell also love their family and would do anything for them. They just do it a bit differently. Time spent with their family is the most important thing in their lives. They visit frequently (as frequent as they can when we live far away) and make everything fun. We will never forget Grandpa's fart machine at the family party. Along that same line, several years ago, Grandma bought each of our kids their own whoopie cushion. (The kids LOVED them!)

Shelby and Grandma at a park in Barcelona.

Grandma and Grandpa Carrell love adventure. We have lots of fun memories of time spent with these grandparents in some amazing places.

These grandparents also make people feel important and look for opportunities to help people out. Many years ago, Danny told me that his mom is the most Christ-like woman he knows. She is definitely in my top three. Grandma Carrell can talk to anyone and has never met a stranger. Grandma cleaned houses for years. I don't think she did it because she needed the money (although I'm sure it was nice) but because she loved helping people.

Grandpa and Jake in Monte Carlo.

Grandpa and Grandma Carrell are patriots. Grandpa served in the Army for 20 years and Grandma cheered him on. He shared some of his experiences in Vietnam (stories of flying Helicopters) and Alaska (what happens in subzero temperatures) with us last week. I am proud to be an American when I listen to Grandpa Carrell. I am thankful for men and women who continue to serve!

I hope my children are paying attention to these great people. And to the grandparents- THANK YOU for being who you are! (Sorry Mom, but you are a great example.)

Colonial Williamsburg

Shelby and Claire are tracked out of school for 3 weeks (they do year round school- so they are in school for 9 weeks then out for 3). Grandma and Grandpa came to visit. They drove from AZ via Texas to NC. We decided to go on a little road trip. We went to Williamsburg, VA. Our first stop was Colonial Williamsburg.

They have re-created the town as it was in the 1770's.
Jake is enjoying a musket. (Who knew that Jake would like a weapon?)

They had lots of fun shops. We are smelling a lovely peppermint soap ball.

Grandpa, Madison and Grandma are enjoying a bit of a break.

The Colonists are discussing those blasted Brits. Trouble's a comin!

This guy is a traitor. Tar and Feather him!!!

We were really close to these people- Kailey was really feeling like she was living in the history!

All of us by the Governor's Palace.

Jake with some really cool swords in the Governor's Palace.

Shelby in the green room. I am sure that the governor and his family felt like they really were in the wilderness. Compared to the elite homes in Europe this feels like the frontier and the edge of civilization.

Claire and Shelby in the gardens behind the palace.

Emery with her new doll Margaret by the gardens at the palace.

We enjoyed our day in Colonial Williamsburg. (However, if you ever get to go to Nauvoo- it is just as fun and FREE!)

16 years? Are you kidding me?

On August 4th we celebrated our 16th wedding anniversary. We went to Chili's for lunch to celebrate.

On Friday, we went to the Temple and the kids made dinner for us. It was great. Sadly, I didn't think to take a picture until we had finished eating. They had really worked hard for us.

Shelby and Emery were our waiters. They met us at the front door and escorted us to our table. They had candles and everything. We enjoyed a lovely salad and then tortellinis for our entree.

The kids even had our wedding video ready to play when we sat down. (We hadn't seen that in ages!)

The kids had each made us a card and they came down to enjoy dessert- super delicious mint brownies with ice cream- (and to laugh at our video). It was the best anniversary dinner we have ever had.

With our waitresses and Madi.

(Me and Danny- an extreme close up- thanks to Jake our in house photographer.)

As for marriage after 16 years? I adore my husband. The best decision I ever made was to marry him. He is my best friend, a great dad, a wonderful provider and my knight in shining armor. Our wedding video ends with- "And they lived happily ever after..." And so it is.

Our new addition...

We have a new member of the family!

Stella Faye Roisin (pronounced Roesheen) Carrell!

Since we didn't go to Hawaii this year, the kids felt like they needed to be compensated. SO we got a puppy. Stella was born on March 28, 2010 (her birthday is a day after Madi's) and is 18 weeks old. She is a Maltipoo (Maltese/poodle mix) and will be about 7-8 pounds when she is fully grown. (She weighs a bit over 4 pounds now.)

Madi, Shelby, Stella, Claire and Emery on the day she came home.

Stella was born in Oklahoma and had a very long flight from Tulsa to Houston to Raleigh. We collected her at the airport (and got lost a few times before finding the cargo area) and on the way home, she was almost immediately sitting up and looking out the window of the car. I guess the plane ride wasn't traumatic at all!

Stella and Claire

At first, she was a bit nervous with the kids, but before long she was out running and chasing them in the backyard.

Em and Stella

Stella loves to chase Emery! This puppy is a hopper! She runs and then hops. It is so fun to watch.

With Jake

Jake is super cute with the little lady. Although today he told me that he has 6 sisters. I reminded him that technically Stella is a dog and not a sister- he wasn't convinced. She loves him and he really enjoys playing with her.

Kailey and Stella as we walked to the Vet.

Kailey wanted to come with me when we took Stella to the vet for the first time. Stella did great and didn't even get really nervous. She now has had all of her puppy vaccines. Now she's ready to get groomed. She is mostly hair.

We are all thrilled and love the little angel. She has a ways to go before she sleeps through the night, and we hope that she will leave fewer surprises in the house soon- but she is so much fun and we love her.

Home

After two months of immense craziness, TONS of drama and a lot of hard work- we really are here. Tonight, Danny gave a really sweet Family Home Evening lesson. He reminded us of the little things that are so important. He quoted Pres. Monson in saying that three of the most important things we need to do as a family are to pray, read the scriptures and spend time together. Then he blessed our house. Finally, it feels like we are home. Hurray.

Au Revoir to the Finglas Ward

We spend a lot of time at church. That is who we are. It was hard to say goodbye to some great people.
Rose, Laura, Me, Alex and Kailey

I loved spending time with the Young Women. They are some amazing gals. I will miss them. Thanks for being so good to me!

This is us with another family from our church. They are originally from the Phillipines. Juni (the dad) just joined the church this year. We think they are great.

There are so many people we love from the Finglas Ward. I didn't take many pictures, but they will always occupy a little place in my heart.

The view from Madi's world

Madi loves all things Dora. One day one of the big girls dressed her up (okay so it's a pink wig and not a black one...)

Miss Madi-Dora

I love the backpack.

Playing with Claire's treehouse (and she has to climb to get to it)

Ready to swim (with a t-shirt on no less)

One day as I was doing the laundry, Madi spied Kailey's underwear. She asked to put them on. I let her.

She's wearing three pair! (LOVE it!)

We call it fishing with fingers.

Got one!

Thank You Drumnigh Wood

As I have said, living in Drumnigh Wood was a great experience for our family. Our kids had so many friends to play with at any time. A few other families are also leaving Ireland, so as a thank you- the moms decided to feed the neighborhood kids. (I actually did none of the planning- just took lots of snickerdoodles- the cookie of choice for all of Jake's friends...)

Jayne and Marleen feeding the masses...

Drake and Claire in the foreground- but what I want you to see are all the boys headed back to the green to play football.

Ben, Sophie and Kailey enjoying their food while Christine cleans up. Sadly- it was a windy and brisk day. The kids didn't seem to mind at all!

Claire, Emery and Madi enjoying Marleens amazing waffles. (Marleen is belgian and her waffles are heavenly!)

Me, Jayne and Christine.

I can't say enough good things about my amazing friends. Christine brings sunshine wherever she goes. Jayne is one of the sweetest women I know. Marleen helped me clean my house- not once- but TWICE as we were getting ready to leave. Not only that- she invited our entire family over (along with some of the neighbor boys) before we went to the airport and fed us all waffles, so we wouldn't be too hungry before getting on the airplane.

I couldn't have asked for better neighbors and friends. Thank you for your goodness!

Surprise Kailey!!!

Kailey's friends wanted to throw her a surprise party. I thought it was a brilliant idea. I facebooked and chatted with Sophie and Dawn for a few weeks- ironing out the details. On a Saturday, Danny took Kailey and the other kids out and I readied the house. Then Dawn, Sophie, Ellen and Ella came over, made cookies and decorated. When my family returned- the girls hid.

I asked Kailey to come into the front room with me because I needed to talk to her for a minute. Then- SURPRISE!!! Out jumped the friends! It was perfect and the best part- Kailey had no idea it was coming!

Thanks girls. You're the best. And those memories- truly priceless!

Jake, Soccer and Friends

When we told the kids that we were moving to Ireland, they cried. They weren't thrilled when we first arrived on the island, but they adjusted really quickly and learned to love it.

Jake has had some really great friends. Most of these friends have LOVED soccer and Jake decided to love it too. He really enjoys playing soccer and spending times with his buddies at the same time. Drumnigh Wood has been great for Jake because all he had to do was walk out of our front door, across the street and there he could play with all his buddies. Heaven

Joe (wishing that Kailey was NOT taking his photo.)

Jake with his goalie gloves. He's ready!!!

Our house in the background- see the Homy?

In March, Jake's class played a match against another school from Northern Ireland.
Jake going after the ball! Go Jake Go!

End score: 2-2

A while back, Jake told me that he thought that he liked Ireland better than New York. Jake has been so good to not complain about leaving. The one thing that has made it much easier for him is that 2 of his best friends are also moving away.

Julian and Jake

Joe is moving to Michigan and Julian is on his way to Surrey, England. Thank you Drumnigh Wood, Ireland and amazing friends for making this time in Jake's life practically perfect.
